Wind power to see US, UK collaboration

Fort Worth News.Net Monday 23rd April, 2012

LONDON - The United States and the United Kingdom are to sign an agreement later this week to collaborate on developing floating wind turbines for deep waters far offshore as part of an international initiative to promote green energy.

The deal will the first of a series of agreements the UK intends to sign with some of the 23 nations attending the Clean Energy Ministerial meeting being held here this week.

The energy summit being co-hosted by Britain's energy minister Ed Davey and his American counterpart Steven Chu is part of international talks to accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies.

The UK and U.S. will agree to work together in the development of floating wind technology designed to generate power in waters as much as 500 feet deep, currently off limits to conventional turbines but where the wind is much stronger.

Britain has more wind turbines installed around its shores than any other country in the world, said Davey adding that the UK market is rated year after year as the most attractive among investors.

"Floating wind turbines will allow us to exploit more of our wind resource, potentially more cheaply. Turbines will be able to locate in ever deeper waters where the wind is stronger but without the expense of (laying) foundations down to the seabed or having to undertake major repairs out at sea. The UK and U.S are both making funding available for this technology and we're determined to work together to capitalise on this shared intent," Davey said,

Under the proposed collaboration, both the UK and US will be making funding available for the joint venture.

There is considerable investor interest in this field. The extent can be gauged by the fact that companies like Japanese trading house Marubeni Corp., Vestas Wind Systems, General Electric Co and Siemens AG (SIE) are all connected with this environment friendly venture in various capacities.

Britain and Germany are leading construction of 35.5 gigawatts of offshore wind plants by 2020, requiring about 127 billion euros ($167 billion) of investment, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.
